En tvåårig masterexamen infördes i Högskoleförordningen från 1 juli 2007 som en påbyggnad på en kandidatexamen eller annan treårig examen på grundnivå, i enlighet med den europeiska Bolognaprocessen. You’ll find one-year (60 ECTS credits) and two-year (120 ECTS credits) programmes. What’s the difference? They’re both master’s programmes. And you’ll take advanced courses, write a master’s thesis, and graduate with a master’s degree, no matter which length of programme you take. It will be registered in accordance with a “Swedish kandidatexamen” (Bachelor’s degree), i.e. 180 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits.

The agreement defines three cycles which are interpreted as Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Research degree (PhD). A 2-year Masters programme has 4 semesters and equals 120 ECTS credits.
